History

Our organisation was formed in 1963 by women’s rights activist, politician and social justice campaigner, Sonja Davies. The aim was to improve quality of care and education for young children, by supporting centres and training staff. 
Since then, our organisation and members have been driving change, challenging attitudes, educating teachers | kaiako and leaders, and growing knowledge and best practice in early childhood and primary education.

Bicultural practice

We are a bicultural organisation with te reo mē ngā tikanga Maōri embedded into all our teaching and learning programmes, professional development, and daily mahi. The principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi are the foundation for our programmes and practices.

Teaching locations

Our flexible blend of online and field-based learning means students can study from anywhere in New Zealand and some overseas countries. With 11 regional education centres around Aotearoa New Zealand, our students | tauira can also access face-to-face or online support from lecturers and pouako.
