Biography

Role

Avril leads and supports the delivery of high quality blended educational programmes to enable student success, as well as leadership for staff and tauira across the rōhe. Her role includes pastoral care of tauira, community networking, professional development initiatives, and relationships with local stakeholders.

Education background

Avril Maxwell is a qualified and registered teacher with over 30 years experience in the tertiary sector, mainly in Initial Teacher Education (ECE), in management and senior lecturer positions. She has taught online and in-person in Aotearoa and overseas in Indonesia, Malaysia and Niue. Avril has also been involved in external moderation, approval and review of ITE programmes.

Research background

Avril’s research interests include education for sustainability, diversity, social justice, children’s literature and multiple literacies.

Teaching interests

Avril has worked across a range of curriculum areas including social justice, diversity, multiple literacies, and teaching practice. Avril enjoys working for the community and has been an active member of the organising committee for the Celebrating Northland’s Tamariki conference since 2003.
