Biography
Role
Emma develops and teaches courses in the Bachelor of Education programme. She also teaches courses in the Graduate Diploma of Teaching (ECE).
Education background
Emma has more than 25 years of experience in early childhood education in teaching, supervision, parent education and teacher education. She joined Te Rito Maioha in 2005.
Research background
Emma’s research interests explore equity using social justice and critical theory frameworks. She is interested in the way children acquire culture, practices and values through early childhood education, exploring the intersection between liberation theology and critical pedagogy – encouraging students to question and challenge inequalities that exist in education and society. Emma’s Master of Education study focused on educational policy and management. She has also enjoyed studying a varied subjects alongside education, including te ara reo Māori, English literature, art, and theology.
Teaching interests
Emma’s teaching values and philosophy reflect her interest in social justice, public policy, advocacy, inclusive education and issues of marginalisation in education. This is reflected in the content of the courses she teaches in the Bachelor of Education programme.
