Online learning

Online learning means you can study and work at the same time from anywhere in Aotearoa, with support from lecturers and pouako, all the resources you need and the flexibility to plan your own time.

You will belong to a connected online community, learning and sharing ideas with other tauira and lecturers and pouako.

Face-to-face learning

Some programmes include a few days of face-to-face learning such as orientation days, noho marae or block courses.

Noho marae is a powerful part of your bicultural learning and teaching journey. You will experience being on a marae alongside your fellow tauira and lecturers and pouako. You will learn about tikanga and kawa – protocol and practices and their meanings.

Field-based learning

Studying while you work in an ECE service or school means you can put your learning into practice right away.

Everyone studying towards a Level 5 Diploma or teaching qualification will work or volunteer with an early childhood centre, home-based service or school while they study. This is your home centre or field-based school.

If you’re studying a Bachelor of Teaching or Graduate Diploma of Teaching, you will also spend time in other ECE centres or primary schools. These blocks of time are called practicum. You will gain professional experience and practice with mentoring from kaiako and visits from your lecturers and pouako. This prepares you to teach as soon as you gain your qualification, and to continue progress towards gaining full registration.

Offshore learning

You may study some of our online-only programmes from overseas countries within the Pan Pacific region. You will be connected and fully supported by our lecturers and pouako and resources.
