Role

As a Regional Education Leader, Rahiri is responsible for managing Rotorua takiwā ako. He also ensures the pastoral care is delivered at the highest level possible inspired by manakitanga, whanungatanga and kotahitanga.

Education Background

Rahiri started his teaching career in 2015 alongside whānau and hapū members at an iwi run bilingual Early Childhood Education centre which was run by our life member – Maureen Te Wehioterangi Jehly. This inspired him to continue working for Te Rito Maioha.

Rahiri is an alumni of Te Rito Maioha. Currently, he is working on his thesis for the master’s degree in Education at Te Rito Maioha.

Research Background

Rahiri’s studies have been focused on inclusion and how mātauranga Māori is experienced by tangata whenua within Initial Teacher Education programmes.

Rahiri was brought up by strong wāhine Māori who fought on the frontline for Māori rights to whenua, language, mātauranga Māori and tino rangatiratanga. His childhood was shaped by class, advocacy, activism, and all things te ao Māori. He recalls growing up in a village relying on natural resources for daily chores. His childhood experiences continue to inspire his whakaaro, worldview, and research interests.

Teaching Interests

Rahiri’s teaching interests are centred around te ao Māori – inclusion, language, identity, culture. He wants to inspire his tauira to develop strong connections with their language, identity, and culture and also acknowledge and respect Māori culture and tradition.
