Integrating Montessori with Indigenous knowledge

Te whakakotahitanga a Montessori ki ngā mātauranga Māori

In this course, students will critically examine Montessori core principles juxtaposed with key concepts of mātauranga Māori/indigenous knowledge. Similarities and differences in the principles, contexts and influences positioned within historical and contemporary education contexts will be explored, including the prevailing views of indigenous people in the late 1800s and first half of the 1900s. Students will critically analyse how mātauranga Māori/indigenous knowledge is or is not supported by Montessori philosophy and critically reflect on what provision needs to happen to encompass a complete expression of values and philosophy core to Māori so they can participate in Montessori education as Māori.

Philosophies that inform the Montessori curriculum

Te Kaupapa rapunga whakaaro o te marautanga Montessori

A key component of this course is the critical exploration of the context and history of Montessori philosophy and pedagogy. Students will analyse the significance of social, cultural, and political influences on Montessori Philosophy and Montessori Pedagogy and how these have shaped the intersection of the Montessori-prepared environment, the prepared adult, and the children. Students will critically investigate the core components of Montessori Philosophy and how they evolved over time and place. Through this investigation, students will gain a deeper understanding of the underpinnings of the philosophy. In their interpretation of the philosophy, students will critically reflect on one or two of the core principles of Montessori Philosophy and focus on how this informs the view Montessori had of the child and their potential.

“I’ve had the privilege of starting my Masters with the two new Montessori masters papers through Te Rito Maioha, and it’s been such a rewarding journey!

The courses, readings, and reflections have given me a much deeper understanding of the history and philosophy behind Montessori education, enriching my perspective on its foundational principles. They’ve also encouraged me to explore the authentic connections between Montessori and mātauranga Māori, showing me how these approaches can beautifully support one another. It’s sparked fresh ideas and has me rethinking my own teaching practice in ways that feel both inspiring and impactful.”
